ISRAEL PROGRAMS
This May marks: * the 100th anniversary of the birth of Teddy Kolleck (May 27, 1911), Mayor of Jerusalem from 1965-1993 Mummies and Masterpieces has TWO programs to offer in honor of Yom HaAtzmaut, Yom Yerushalayim, and Teddy Kolleck's 100th birthday. 1. ISRAEL: HER STORY THROUGH ART
How do we characterize "Israeli Art"? Join us as we delve into a discussion about the works of Israeli artists Anna Ticho, Leopold Krakauer, Jakob Steinhardt, Yitzhak Danziger, Marcel Janco, Josef Zaritsky, and Yoram Gal. What influences did they bring with them from their own places of origin, and how did they reflect the last 63 years of Israeli landscape, people, emotions and politics?
After our discussion, we will participate in a hands-on art workshop. The project will depend on the interest of the students, but could include Biblical woodblock prints, Israeli watercolor landscape paintings, and more!
This program is appropriate for children and adult groups.
2. CONTEMPORARY ISRAELI ARTISTS
Shneur Herman
3-D Microcalligraphy
Tzefat, Israel
All of Shneur’s three-dimensional paintings are constructed from texts of Hebrew Scriptures, prayers, ceremonies and songs. Students will have a chance to choose personally meaningful texts from Jewish Scriptures or tefillot, incorporate them into their own watercolor painting, and include Shneur’s special 3-d technique. This is a style that visually depicts the beauty and sanctity of the words of G-d, which we live by every day.
Yoram Gal
Watercolor Landscapes
Old Yaffo (Jaffa), Israel
Yoram lives and works in the port city of Old Yaffo. He provides us with spectacular glimpses into the views that surround him every day, in addition to other important and scenic landmarks in Israel. Yoram brings his talent in playwriting, theatre acting, set design, and stage design, to his painted canvases. He enjoys working in watercolors, and paints with a combined, special mixture in order to achieve the brightness and contrast and intensity and softness that typify his style. Yoram identifies most with Expressionist Emil Nolde, in addition to Pieter Bruegel, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. Students will create their own landscape paintings, inspired by the fantastic energy and creative drama of Yoram.
Marci Weisel
Papercuts
Alon Shvut, Israel
Marci creates art that revolves around family. She includes prayers and quotes that sanctify the Jewish home and special Jewish lifecycle events. Works include: the Shema and Modeh Ani (prayers upon retiring at night and waking up in the morning), prayer upon lighting Shabbat candles, scriptural quotes about parents and children, prayer for the teacher, prayer for those who recently moved their home to Israel, and of course, prayer for the State of Israel. Her whimsical and cheerful designs are immediately engaging and appealing to young and old. Students will create papercut tefillot and mount them upon their own colorful watercolor designs.
Kamy Raviv
Beaded Tapestries
Ramat Gan, Israel
Kamy’s artwork is a combination of threads, delicate fabrics, and beads. By combining these materials, Kamy creates realistic and authentic pieces which depict Jewish symbols and folklore images from Jewish towns, Israeli culture and Jewish tradition. Her striking works of art are hand-made and are displayed and sold in galleries throughout Israel, Europe and the U.S. Kamy named her studio and her business after her mother, Ne’ema, who lovingly taught her the skill of tapestry-making. Students will now learn this skill and will create their own beaded tapestries with bright fabrics, beautiful beads, and silky threads.
